I’m not opposed to rock music. But somewhere along the line the music at some of the churches turned into rock and roll that is all about me, myself and I. Now I can’t say the music is evil, but I do think it’s distracting. When you’re trying to focus on God and someone is beating the heck out of a crash cymbal it seems counterproductive.
Also the focus seems to be more on what I personally get out of a worship service. How does it make me feel? The lyrics are many times biblically off-base or semi-narcissistic. I’d like to see more music that has lyrical content like hymns. I’m less concerned with the style as long as it’s not distracting. The hymns have a certain quality where you can hear everyone singing as opposed to just one voice. And honestly there aren’t many CCM worship songs that compare lyrically with Be Thou My Vision or Come Thou Fount.

So I came across your blog after searching for McGee and Me! and YouTube and your blog link was in the info tab. I’ve only read the first three articles and you have some interesting points.
I think your comments about this matter does speak some truth when it comes to actually lyrical content that can seem semi-narcissistic and self indulgent but when it comes to the actual style of worship it is all a matter of personal taste and how God speaks to you.
We so often put God in a box and say the best worship or the best way for us to connect with him is “X” because that is what works for us. But what about those people who don’t respond to hymns or a more traditional worship style. I am one of those people at time. God speaks to me through music even some secular music where I see a verse, line, or message that speaks to my heart.
What you can see as distracting can be what draws someone else in. For example, somethings there is nothing more musically beautiful to me than the timing of double bass drum kicks and cymbal crashes by artists such as August Burns Red. The way it is played draws me in the the music and lyrical content and I am able to focus on what the song means and how it applies to my life and relationship with God.
Again I think it is all a matter of personal taste and your view could be seen by someone as the same unneeded that you speak of in your most recent post.

Certainly music is subjective, but the focus of worship should be Christ. A hardcore screamo isn’t going to go over real well at your average church. Mainly because the music will overshadow people’s ability to focus on Christ. I think the purpose of music in the church is to get people’s eyes on Christ. If the music becomes the focus, the one you are singing to is not the focus. It is entirely possible that there is music that is edifying to the individual, which may not be appropriate in a larger church setting.
